Amity Island was the fictional populated island from the movie Jaws. Amity Island was located off of New England and had the town of Amity Village and Amity Harbour. Amity had a large tourism industry on its beaches. It also had a very hungry great white shark off its coast. The fear instilled by this movie had an unexpected impact on beach tourism. The film's portrayal of shark attacks created a sense of unease among beachgoers leading to a decline in beach related activities after the movie's release. I spent a lot of time at the beach as a kid and can remember being very anxious every time I stepped foot in the water for the next year or two.
